The picture is good. The library name is IMG_4401-final-FINAL-v7.jpg. The next desk will not find it.
Image filename English APAC is the short hyphenated name that tells a tired operator what the file is before they open it: the object, the place if it matters, and the date.
Street-smart APAC English: short sentences a tired operator can say out loud.
This is the language companion to our field photo and video kit standards, which puts “naming pattern agreed” on the checklist before the convoy leaves. That piece says have a pattern. This one writes it.
It also sits next to our alt text English APAC and image caption English APAC pieces. Alt is the sentence machines read. The caption is the sentence sighted readers read. The filename is the name in the library, and often in the public URL of the image.
Communications craft, not legal advice. Do not put a charge or a private name in a filename that will travel.
Why do campaign libraries turn into landfill?
Camera defaults and version theatre. IMG_, DSC_, Screenshot at 21.14.08, logo (1) copy, final-FINAL-use-this.
Search inside the library dies. The rights paperwork dies with the file nobody can find. Then someone at 1 a.m. uses the wrong version, or a photo that was cleared for the website only ends up in a paid ad.
A filename is not decoration. It is the first line of the record.

What should an image filename English APAC name say?
Object, place, date. Lowercase. Hyphens between words.
| File | Kill this | Say this (illustrative) |
|---|---|---|
| Flooded classroom | IMG_4401-final-v7.jpg | flooded-classroom-barangay-hall-sep2026.jpg |
| Budget chart | Chart-NEW-USE-THIS.png | classroom-vs-flood-line-2027-draft.png |
| Briefing still | Screenshot 2026-09-30 at 21.14.08.png | briefing-lectern-30sep2026.jpg |
| Partner logo | logo (1) copy.png | partnername-logo-lockup-colour.png |
No spaces. No caps soup. No “final.” Every example here is illustrative. Use your own objects and dates.

Keep it short enough to read in a file list without scrolling sideways. If the name needs a sentence, that sentence belongs in the alt or the caption.
What must the filename not do?
| Ban | Why | Instead |
|---|---|---|
| A person’s full name plus “injury” | The filename becomes a leak | Object and date only |
| “illegal” or “scandal” | You just titled the exhibit | Describe the object |
| Version theatre (final-FINAL-use-this) | Nobody knows which file shipped | One current name. Old files in an archive folder |
| An unreleased number | The file travels before the number is public | Name the chart, not the figure |
Filenames leak in quiet ways. They show up in image URLs, in shared-drive previews, in the “save as” box when a reporter downloads your picture. Assume a stranger will read every filename you publish.
How do versions work without “final”?
One live name. Everything else is history.
When a file changes, the new version takes the clean name and the old one moves to an archive folder with its date. If you must keep versions side by side, use a date or a short version number at the end: briefing-lectern-30sep2026-v2.jpg. Never a mood word. “final” is a wish, not a version.
The person who uploads to the website picks the live file. Name that person on the desk sheet, so nobody else “fixes” the library at midnight.
What goes on the four-line file card?
Every upload gets a card before it hits the library.
- Filename.
- Alt.
- Caption.
- Rights line.
Paste-ready card (illustrative):
Filename: flooded-classroom-barangay-hall-sep2026.jpg
Alt: Floodwater at desk height in a public classroom.
Caption: Photo from the school visit, with date and credit.
Rights: Used with permission. Not for paid ads without a new grant.
The filename and the alt name the same object. If they argue, one of them is wrong.
Does the filename help search?
A little, and only as a hint. Search engines may read a descriptive filename as one small clue about what an image shows. It will not rescue a page with an empty alt or a vague caption.
Name files for the next person on your desk first. If that helps a machine too, fine.

Monday field kit
- Object, place, date.
- Hyphens, lowercase.
- No IMG_, no final-v7.
- Filename and alt name the same object.
- Rights line on the card before upload.
- One named person picks the live file.
FAQs
What is image filename English APAC?
Image filename English APAC is the hyphenated library name that lets a night desk find the file without opening it. It names the object, the place if it matters, and the date.
Do we rename files that are already live?
Renaming a live file usually changes its public URL, so any page or partner that uses the old link can break. Rename only where you can update every page that uses it, and fix the habit for every new upload.
What language should the filename use?
Use English object words in the filename and local names for the place. Do not mix scripts inside one filename if your site or storage tool breaks on it.
Who owns the naming pattern?
One person on the desk owns the pattern and writes it on the desk sheet. Everyone else follows it, and changes to the pattern go through that person.
What to do this week
Open the last twenty uploads. Count how many start with IMG_ or end with final. Rename the ones you safely can before the next pack ships.
