Coalition Sign-On line English APAC, Singapore: Who speaks, who does not.
Who Speaks.

The statement went out in the morning. Within the hour, three partner leaders had given three different quotes to three different reporters.

The statement was fine. Nobody had agreed who speaks for it.

Coalition sign-on English APAC is the roster line under a joint statement: who signed, the one named voice who speaks for the coalition, and the line every other partner says when a reporter calls.

Street-smart APAC English: short sentences a tired operator can say out loud.

Our coalition joint statement English APAC piece covers the statement text. This one covers the list underneath it and the phone calls that follow. Different object, different job.

What goes in a coalition sign-on English APAC line?

Three parts. The roster, the named voice, the referral line. Agree all three before anyone signs.

Sign-on line (illustrative):
“Signed by: Eastside Tenants Association, Market Vendors Guild, Riverside Neighbours Network, Youth for Clean Air.”
“Media contact for the coalition: Maria Reyes, spokesperson, by email or the number on this release.”
“Partner referral line: We signed it and we stand by it. Maria Reyes speaks for the coalition. Here is her number.”

The roster is the record. The named voice is the one person reporters quote. The referral line protects everyone else.

Who should be the one named voice?

One person, named, reachable and briefed on the full statement. Not the biggest partner by default. The person who can take calls all day.

Pick the named voice for availability and steadiness, not seniority. A spokesperson who cannot answer the phone until evening is worse than a less senior one who picks up. Name a backup in case they are unreachable. Both go in the internal roster. Only the primary goes on the release.

What do partners say when a reporter calls them?

The referral line, word for word. Signed, stand by it, here is who speaks.

Partners will get calls. Reporters ring the organisation they already know. The referral line lets a partner be polite, confirm they signed and hand over without freelancing a new quote.

Kill this Say this (illustrative) Why
Personally, our group thinks it goes too far We signed it and we stand by it. No public daylight between partners
No comment We signed it. Maria Reyes speaks for the coalition. Confirms, then refers
Our group led this whole thing We are one of the signatories. No credit fights in print
Let me give you our own angle Here is her number. She has the full picture. One voice, one story
Signed by: a broad alliance of concerned groups Each organisation, by full name A roster a reporter can check
Kill this, say this panel: habits crossed out, replaced by who speaks, who does not.
Kill this: the habit lines.

How should the roster be listed?

Full organisation names, in an order everyone agreed. No individual names or titles unless each person agreed in writing.

Alphabetical order is the easiest to defend. If the coalition picks another order, write down why. Use each partner’s own preferred name and spelling. Do not add a partner because someone said yes in a group chat. Each one confirms in writing, with the final text in front of them.

Can a partner sign on but stay unnamed?

Yes, if the coalition agrees how to say it. Never list a partner who has not confirmed, and never hide that others signed.

Unnamed-partners line (illustrative):
“Signed by the organisations above and other community groups who asked not to be named.”

Use it only if those groups agreed to that exact wording. Counsel checks consent and any disclosure duties before it goes out.

How does this play out in PH and SG?

The roster and the named voice work the same way. What changes is how fast partners get called, and in which language.

Philippines desk. Coalitions often mix parish groups, people’s organisations, unions, student councils and local chapters, each with its own media habits. Reporters may call a local leader in Filipino or the regional language. Translate the referral line once, check it with a native speaker, and send it to every partner contact, not just the heads.

Singapore and wider APAC desk. Partners may be registered societies, charities or companies with their own approval chains. Build sign-off time into the plan. Some partners will want their own review of the roster wording. Let them, and do not publish until every confirmation is in.

What to do this week

  1. List every partner by full preferred name. Get written confirmation from each.
  2. Name one voice and one backup. Check both can take calls on release day.
  3. Write the referral line and send it to every partner contact.
  4. Agree the roster order and write down why.
  5. Run a test call: ring one partner as a reporter would and listen.

Kill rule: if more than one person is quoted as speaking for the coalition, the sign-on failed. Fix the roster before the next release.

FAQs

What is coalition sign-on English APAC?

Coalition sign-on English APAC is the roster line under a joint statement: who signed, the one named voice who speaks for the coalition, and the line every other partner says when a reporter calls. It is separate from the statement text.

Can partners still talk about their own work?

Yes. They can talk about their own programs. On the joint statement, they use the referral line.

What if the named voice is unreachable?

The backup takes over, and every partner gets the updated name the same hour. The referral line changes with it.

Is a quote card the same as the sign-on?

No. A quote card shares one sentence from the statement, and the sign-on decides who signed and who speaks. See our coalition quote card English APAC piece for the card.

Neuwark Communications sets up coalition comms as part of our services, including Strategy & Messaging. If your partners keep freelancing quotes, talk to us at Contact. More language companions live in Insights.

Communications craft, not legal advice. Counsel checks election-period, consent and platform rules, plus each partner’s sign-off and any disclosure duties, before a roster is published.
