404 Recovery English APAC: 404 Recovery English APAC.
404 Recovery English APAC.

A branded illustration is not a recovery.

404 recovery English APAC is four lines on a missing page: you are in the wrong place, here is the page that matches what you asked, here is the index, here is the desk. Nothing else.

Street-smart APAC English: short sentences a tired operator can say out loud.

This is a companion to our path-naming lock, URL slug English APAC. That piece names the path before you publish. This one writes the page people see when a path breaks anyway.

Every line below is illustrative. Check what your own 404 says today before you paste anything.

Why do 404 pages leak trust?

They joke. They sell. They say “lost in the cut” and then offer a newsletter.

The visitor arrived with a query. They do not need a vibe. They need the object.

A miss usually happens at a bad moment. A reporter clicked an old link during a live story. A partner shared a retired URL in a group chat. A voter typed a path from a poster. Each of them is already annoyed. The 404 decides whether they try again or leave.

What are the four 404 recovery English APAC lines?

Line Job Say this (illustrative)
1. Status Name the miss “That page is not here.”
2. Rescue One best next URL “If you wanted the FAQ markup lines, use this page.”
3. Index A real list “All Insights.”
4. Desk A human route “If this link came from us, email the desk with the URL you typed.”
Kill this, say this panel: habits crossed out, replaced by curl the ten URLs you retired this month, redirect the ones with a true…, leave 404 only where there is no….
Kill this: the habit lines.

Do not put three calls to action on a miss. One rescue. One index. One desk.

Kill this / say this

Kill this Why it fails Say this
“Oops! Our bad 😅” Cute is not a path “That page is not here.”
“While you’re here, donate” You turned a miss into a grab The rescue URL only
A search box with no suggested page It makes them work twice One suggested page that matches common misses
“Explore our story” Story is not the object “All Insights”

That page is not here.
If you wanted the street-smart English lines for FAQ markup, open that Insight.
Or start at All Insights.
If a link on our site sent you here, forward the URL you typed to the desk.

Redirect or 404?

Redirect when the object moved. 404 when the object is gone and nothing replaces it.

A redirect is a promise that the new page answers the same question. If it does not, you are sending people somewhere they did not ask to go. Redirecting every dead URL to the homepage is the classic version of that mistake. Visitors land on a page that has nothing to do with their click, and search engines may treat it as a soft 404 anyway.

A true miss should also return a real 404 status, not a normal page that happens to say “not found.” Ask whoever runs the site to check the status code, not just the copy.

Who picks the rescue URL?

The desk that owns the content, not the developer. The developer knows which templates exist. The desk knows which page people were really looking for.

Pick the rescue from the misses you can see: server logs, analytics, or the links partners actually shared. Do not guess the query. If you cannot see the misses yet, point line two at the Insights index and say so.

What is the kill rule?

If the 404 sells, asks, or jokes before it rescues, it is not a recovery page. It is a leak.

Incident line, for the desk log:

A public link pointed at a removed URL. The 404 now names the replacement page. The old path has a redirect where one exists.

What goes in the weekly miss log?

Four columns. The path people hit, where they came from, the rescue you picked, and the date you fixed it.

Missed path Came from Rescue Fixed
/insights/old-budget-explainer/ Partner newsletter Redirect to the current explainer Same day
/press-2024/ Poster QR code Redirect to the press page Next print run too

Both rows are illustrative. The second is the kind nobody catches until a volunteer complains: a printed path you cannot recall. Fix the redirect, then fix the artwork.

Monday field kit

  1. Curl the ten URLs you retired this month.
  2. Redirect the ones with a true replacement.
  3. Leave 404 only where there is no replacement.
  4. Put the four lines on the 404 template.
  5. Log the misses once a week. Do not guess the query.
  6. Read the 404 on a phone. If line two wraps into three lines, cut it.

FAQs

What is 404 recovery English APAC?

404 recovery English APAC is the short copy on a missing page that names the miss and points to one real next step. It is written for someone who arrived annoyed and wants the object, not the brand.

Should every removed Insight return a 404?

No, if the object moved, redirect it to the page that answers the same question. A 404 is for pages with no heir.

Can the 404 mention the campaign?

The 404 can mention the campaign only if the campaign page is the rescue URL people likely wanted. Do not use a miss to relaunch the manifesto.

What language should the 404 be in?

The 404 should match the language of the section the visitor was trying to reach. If you run pages in more than one language, give each section its own four lines instead of one mixed page.
