A desk-ready pitch email gives a reporter the story in one line, the proof in three, and the ask in one. Nothing else. When a watchdog number drops mid-plenary, that email is the difference between coverage and a PDF nobody opens.

This is the language companion to our earned media pitch ladder for the ₱970B watchdog week. That piece covers the ladder, the desk map, the asset pack, and desk hours. This one gives you the English for each rung, from briefing room to national desk.

The facts used below are the ones in the parent piece: on 18 September 2026 the People’s Budget Coalition raised its red-flag tally to ₱970 billion inside the proposed ₱7.2-trillion 2027 budget, up from about ₱735 billion. Swap in your own verified number for the next briefing.

Why do pitch emails die before the second line?

Because reporters triage on the subject line and the first sentence. The parent piece names the killers: spray-and-pray blasts, wrong beat, midnight dumps, PDF worship, and five spokespeople with five metaphors.

The fix is sentence discipline. One number. One angle per desk. One ask. One owner.

What does a desk-ready subject line look like?

Short, specific, and built for the desk reading it. Label the time zone.

Desk rung Weak subject Desk-ready subject
Civic / barangay “Press release: budget watchdog findings” “What ₱970B in flagged items means for local projects”
City / regional “Media advisory – please see attached” “Regional cut: flagged 2027 budget items outside Metro Manila”
Business / fiscal “Coalition statement on budget” “₱970B red-flag tally: the fiscal-risk angle, data cut attached”
National politics “URGENT!!! Budget briefing” “Watchdog tally rises to ₱970B as plenary runs – briefing 11:00 PHT”
Kill this, say this panel: habits crossed out, replaced by four subject lines, five-line spine, pre-clear three quotes.
Kill this: the habit lines.

No “URGENT”. No “please see attached”. The number and the angle do the work.

What goes in a desk-ready pitch email for each desk?

The parent piece’s pack rule: every rung gets a subject line, a 150-word pitch, a quote card, and one visual. Same spine, different cut. Here is the spine in five sentences.

Line Job Example
1 The number “Watchdogs flagged ₱970B in red-flag items inside the ₱7.2T 2027 budget.”
2 The change “That is up from about ₱735B earlier.”
3 The desk angle Civic: local projects. Business: fiscal risk. Politics: plenary timing.
4 The asset “A one-page data cut and a cleared quote are attached.”
5 The ask “Our spokesperson is free for a 10-minute call before 13:00 PHT.”

Then stop. Add a short human paragraph only if the desk needs one. The parent piece says it: reporters are distribution partners under deadline, not students.

Which format goes to which rung?

Same spine. Different object. Do not send the national object to the local rung.

Rung Object Test
Local / trade desk Text or WhatsApp stub, no PDF Readable on prepaid data
National day desk Email pitch plus one attachment Still makes sense after a forward to a politics editor
Validator / third party Quote card Can be read on camera without a clause pile

Which lines should never go in a budget-week pitch?

The parent piece asks for a kill list. Here it is as sentences.

Line Why it burns you Say instead
“Shocking corruption revealed” A claim your number may not support “Watchdogs flagged ₱970B in red-flag items.”
“Everyone is talking about this” Unverifiable and lazy Name the angle for this desk.
“See attached 40-page report” Homework, not a pitch “One-page data cut attached. Full report linked.”
Unverified figures One wrong number kills the next ten pitches Leave it out until it is verified.
“Exclusive” sent to five outlets Burns the desk forever Offer an exclusive to one desk, or none.
“We are deeply concerned about revelations…” Concern is not news “[Watchdog] published [X]. Our brief lists [Y] questions still unanswered.”
“Sources say the real number is higher” You just became the story “We are using only the published figure until a named source updates it.”
“Please consider covering our event” The event is not the news “The news is the flag. The event is where we walk the documents.”

How do follow-up texts work when plenary is live?

One follow-up. Short. Useful. Timed to desk hours in Asia/Manila time.

  • Morning window: “Morning. Embargo lifts 08:00 PHT on the regional cut. Link here. Spokesperson free until 09:30.”
  • Midday refresh: “Updated number card attached after the plenary break. Same spokesperson, free till 13:00.”
  • Late afternoon: “Second-day angle for politics desks: what the tally means for the next reading. Call if useful.”

If there is no reply, do not send a second follow-up the same day. Log the attempt. The parent piece asks for a placement log so nobody double-pitches the same reporter.

What does the spokesperson say on the call?

Three pre-cleared lines, one each for accountability, care, and competence. No freelancing past them.

The watchdog tally is ₱970 billion in flagged items. Families deserve to know where that money goes. Here is the data cut, and here is what we want lawmakers to explain.

Three sentences. One number. One human reason. One ask of power. If a reporter pushes for a claim the number does not support, repeat the number.

What does a validator get to say?

One sentence. Pattern: “[Name] wants [specific document or hearing action] because [one proof].” Not: “We stand with the Filipino people.”

If the validator adds colour on a live shot, the colour is off-message. Prep the sentence in English and in the language of the show. Same claim.

Monday field kit

  1. Write four subject lines, one per rung, for your next briefing.
  2. Draft the five-line spine and three desk variants. Keep each under 150 words.
  3. Pre-clear three quote lines with your coalition lead.
  4. Save the three follow-up texts with PHT times in the pitch owner’s phone.
  5. Start a placement log: desk, reporter, time, angle, result.
  6. Read your pitch out loud and time it. If it runs past 45 seconds, cut.

FAQs

What is a desk-ready pitch email?

It is a short pitch built for one news desk: a specific subject line, the number, the desk’s angle, one asset, and one ask. It fits in about 150 words and never relies on an attachment to explain the story.

How many follow-ups should we send?

One, timed to desk hours in Asia/Manila time, with something new: an embargo time, an updated number card, or a second-day angle.

Should we pitch every desk at once?

No. The parent piece recommends laddering from civic to city to business to national desks, or reversing when a floor moment demands it.

Can we call the findings corruption?

Only say what the evidence supports. Use the watchdog’s own wording and number, and let reporters draw their own conclusions.

Can we put the full policy platform in the pitch?

No. Link it. The pitch carries the news hook, the checkable figure, the offer of a person, and the time.
