A rate card is not a message.

Mid-tier progressive campaigns in the Philippines buy AM, FM, and podcast host-reads, then hand the talent a paragraph that sounds like a Manila deck. The host speeds up. The listener hears an ad. The make-good is a second bad read.

Provincial radio host-read English (and the FIL twin you should lock next) is copy a host can say in one breath between traffic and weather.

This is the language companion to our piece on provincial radio and podcast sponsorship ROI. That post is buying, make-goods, and tests. This one is the sentences.

Neuwark Communications writes campaign language for PH and APAC desks. This is craft, not a media-buying guarantee and not election-law advice. Counsel signs anything that names a candidate, party, or donation ask in a regulated window.

What does a 15-second host-read need?

Four beats. No greeting. No “magandang umaga” tax if the show already said it.

Provincial Radio Host-Read card: Read it into a phone, test on an outsider, record when it airs.
Say this: Read it into a phone, test on an outsider, record when it airs.
Beat Seconds Pattern
Who 3 Named org or candidate, said the way locals already say it
Problem 4 One concrete thing that is broken this week
Proof 4 One number or named source you would defend on air
Ask 4 One behaviour: listen, go, text, show up

Worked 15-second English (illustrative coalition, not a live client line):

This is a note from [Coalition Name].
The social-protection line in the budget fight is the one that hits the same households twice.
The figure is in the committee’s own brief this session.
Details at [short URL]. Not a donation pitch on this read.

If the host cannot say it without looking down twice, cut words, not the proof.

What does a 30-second host-read add?

One human scene. Not a second policy.

Kill this, say this panel: habits crossed out, replaced by read it into a phone, test on an outsider, record when it airs.
Kill this: the habit lines.

Same open.
Then: “If you ride the first trip out and still buy water after the pump fails, that line is you.”
Then the same proof and the same ask.

Do not add a second URL. Do not add a slogan in a different language mid-sentence unless that mix is how the host already talks.

Which lines should you kill before the talent sees them?

Kill Why it dies on air Replace with
“Be part of the solution” Empty. Hosts rush it. Named next step.
“Hold power to account” Manifesto cadence. Name the hearing or the office.
“Tune in to our digital platforms” Nobody does. One URL or one keyword.
English idioms: “move the needle,” “double down” Sound imported. Local verbs.
Fake folksiness written by HQ Provincial listeners hear cosplay. Write like a sharp teacher, not a mascot.

Street-smart English on radio is the same rule as the rest of this series: subject, verb you can check, one claim.

What is the make-good sentence if the first read was wrong?

Do not argue with the station in public.

Flat illustration, Manila shift timeline with three marked beats: Read it into a phone, test on an outsider, record when it airs.
Desk note: Record when it airs.

Send the traffic desk:

The [date, time] read used [wrong name / old ask / extra slogan].
Please run the locked card only — attached, 15s and 30s.
We will take the make-good in the same daypart.
Do not ad-lib a correction on air.

Then log the error in the buy file. A wrong name on air is a message incident, not a “talent moment.”

Monday field kit

  1. Read the 15-second cut into your phone. Play it in a jeepney noise video. If proof vanishes, rewrite.
  2. Hand the script to someone who does not do comms. If they cannot repeat the ask, the ask is mush.
  3. Record the host-read when it airs. Compare to the card. One mismatch = make-good, not a shrug.
  4. Lock a FIL twin from the same spine. Do not translate idioms. See multilingual message discipline.

FAQs

What is host-read English?

It is sponsorship copy written for a human voice: short beats a presenter can say without sounding like a press release.

Should podcast host-reads match radio?

Same spine. Longer air can take one scene. Still one ask. Still no second URL.

Is this legal advice for political ads?

No. Philippine election and advertising rules change by window and medium. Counsel and the station’s traffic rules win over a clever line.

What to do this week

Rewrite one live host-read to the 15-second card. Kill two phrases from the table. Attach the card to the insertion order so traffic cannot “polish” it.
